| 2890 | Ficklin-Beard , Renley | 4541 | Life Beneath the Pond Homes, Habits, and Hidden Lives of Crawdads Most people walk past a pond without realizing what is happening beneath the surface. Hidden among the rocks, mud, and plants lives a community of crawdads. These fascinating crustaceans spend their days building homes, searching for food, avoiding predators, and interacting with one another. Using photographs taken at my own pond, I observed where crawdads live, what they eat, and how they behave in their natural habitat. Their burrows and hiding places provide protection, while the pond supplies the food and resources they need to survive. Although they are often difficult to spot, crawdads play an important role in the pond ecosystem by helping recycle organic matter and serving as food for other animals. To better understand these observations, scientific journals and research articles were used to corroborate the information presented in this project. Comparing my field observations with scientific research helped confirm the behaviors, habitat preferences, and ecological importance of crawdads. This project offers a closer look at the homes, habits, and hidden lives of the crawdads that live beneath the pond's surface.
