Round and Round We Go: A Carousel Comeback
For this Home Environment project, I repurposed a vintage circular side table with a large swing door for storage and transformed it into a carousel-inspired accent piece. I chose this table because I loved its unique shape and thought it would be the perfect foundation for creating a carnival carousel.
The first step was sanding the table. Vintage furniture often has years of built-up polish and finishes that can prevent paint from adhering properly. By carefully sanding the piece, I created a surface that would allow the paint and embellishments to last.
To create the carousel effect, I added a variety of embellishments and decorative details. I hand-painted wooden horses and used texture paint to add dimension and make them stand out. Finding the right embellishments was one of the most challenging and enjoyable parts of the project. I searched vintage shops, online marketplaces, and even received pieces from family members to help create an authentic carousel look.
Once I gathered the materials, I attached the embellishments using wood glue and secured any heavier pieces when needed. My favorite part of the project was adding the finishing touch—a working Lazy Susan that my grandfather and I built together. We carefully attached it so the carousel could rotate smoothly and safely, making it feel like a real carousel.
This project combined creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship. It taught me the value of repurposing vintage furniture while creating something unique and functional. The finished carousel table is one of my favorite projects because it combines my love of county fair themes with a piece of furniture that can be enjoyed for years to come. |
